TESTED ON PlAYSTATION 3 SLIM 3.55: CONFIRMED WORKING
a ps3 or fat
USB stick with 256 MB minimum

Create a folder called PS3 USB key root
Create a UPDATE folder in the folder PS3
Place the file in the UPDATE folder PS3UPDAT.PUP
Connect your USB dongle to your PS3
Turn on your PS3 and head into Settings / System Update / Update via Storage Media, then follow the instructions not your console.
Unzip the file in FW 3.55patch root of your hard drive (C: /).
Paste the file PS3UPDAT.PUP 3.55 firmware inside the extracted folder in 1
From Windows, start and in the search window type Run, type cmd opens a window and entered.
[Center]
A DOS window opens, type cd c: \ FW 3.55patch then entered.
Then type bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP PS3UPDAT-NEW.PUP PS3UPDAT.PUP.bsdiff and press Enter.
Validate the different information requested by your Windows. Wait for the window closes bspatch (about 3 minutes) and you should see a file named PS3UPDAT-NEW.PUP in the c: \ FW 3.55patch
Also in the DOS window type md5.exe PS3UPDAT-NEW.PUP
The series of digits that will follow is the md5sum of your file, it must be absolutely equal to cd72d63f1a616ecf786ff382bfae671a if this is not the case, look no further.
Note: If the series is equal to 337831fac6a9b05074f73710c4bb7c86 is that you used the patch and not v1 v2.
You need a firmware from version 3.55 (custom or not).
Create a folder called PS3 USB key root
Create a UPDATE folder in the folder PS3
Place the file-PS3UPDAT NEW.PUP in the UPDATE folder and rename the PS3UPDAT.PUP
Connect your USB dongle to your PS3
Turn on your PS3 and head into Settings / System Update / Update via Storage Media, then follow the instructions not your console.
Note: If the console does not want to update you have to go through the Recovery Console mode. Why leave your console on, press the power button until the console is completely extinguished. Turn the bike by pressing the power button for ten seconds, a few beeps are heard, then release and you'll be on the Recovery Mode.
Place the file in the UPDATE folder PS3UPDAT.PUP your USB key
Connect your USB dongle to your PS3.
Turn on your PS3 and head into Settings / System Update / Update via Storage Media, you should see the winks of GeoHot. Follow the instructions not your console.
Well, now the joys of homebrew, online gaming, boot back-up in 3.55.
